Alumni Page

Since its formation in 2017, student at all stages of their undergraduate degree have been involved with the ASRJ. The continuous growth of the organization would be impossible without the commitment and effort of past ASRJ members, executives and partners. We are proud of the contribution that our past members have made to our organization and of the impact they continue to have on the world; therefore, we want to highlight our alumni and thank them for how they have shaped the ASRJ.

Jeremy Slayter

Second Year Medical Student | Past Role with ASRJ: Co-Founder/Chair

“The ASRJ gave me the opportunity to work with students, as well as learn significant amounts about local research. I was able to learn a lot about how research happens in New Brunswick, and potential career paths that I could take. I also learned key skills in management, marketing, design, research, writing, and editing while I was involved with the ASRJ.”

Andrew Ward

Third Year Medical Student | Past Role with ASRJ: Co-Founder/Chair

“The ASRJ had a significant positive impact on my academic and professional growth as an undergraduate student. I was able to explore my scientific interests and gain career insight through connections with researchers and their overarching organizations — most importantly, from fields that I would not have been exposed to through my program. It has been a pleasure to witness The Journal’s evolution from its conception in a university dorm room to the well-established network in the provincial research ecosystem. I highly recommend that undergraduate students from all fields of study consider becoming involved with the group.”

Matthew MacLennan

Medical Student | Past Role with ASRJ: Chair

Getting started with the ASRJ in my second year was by far the best choice I made during my undergraduate degree. The team at the ASRJ worked with me to identify fields of interest, which assisted me in finding my passion within medicine. Without the ASRJ, I would have never discovered research opportunities at the Institute of Biomedical Engineering or pursued additional education post-graduation. In addition to this, the ASRJ taught me the importance of unity. Getting academic-minded positions is tough. The organization exists to bring like-minded students together to collaborate and help one another navigate a competitive and ambiguous path to research. This solidified the need to work together with others in difficult environments, an attribute important to any field. I hope you consider getting involved with the ASRJ, it is an incredible group to be a part of. Regardless of your degree or goals, you can learn many valuable lessons from being involved with this group.

Daniel Hanscom

Medical Student | Past Role with ASRJ: Editor-in-chief

“My time with the ASRJ was one of the highlights of my university career. I had the opportunity to watch the ASRJ grow from an idea in a study room, to becoming a renowned organization across the Atlantic Universities. One of my passions in life has always been to support others in reaching their goals, which is ultimately one of the principles the ASRJ was founded on. Recognizing this inspired me to pursue the position as Editor-in-Chief, where I could play a direct role in helping disseminate local opportunities to those around me. I believe the ASRJ plays a pivotal role in bridging the gap between students and opportunity. Every article you write, event you host, and post you share has the potential to create an avenue for someone to pursue their goals.”

Chantelle Masterson

Renaissance College Graduate | Past Role with ASRJ: Outreach Director

“The ASRJ was a really great way to introduce me to the world of research and academia. There is so much going on at UNB and in Fredericton that I would have never known about. What I learned from the ASRJ helped me during multiple research projects that I’ve been involved with, and my experience on the ASRJ executive team helped me to land a position on the UNB Student Union executive team as VP Communications for the 2019-2020 year.

Sam Areseneau

5th Year Bachelor of Science Student | Past Role with ASRJ: Direct. of Finance & Fundraising

“The ASRJ was the first extracurricular group that I joined at UNB, and I was very lucky to join one that was as well run as the ASRJ. Watching the executive of the club run the group was certainly eye opening to me and taught me a lot about how to work as part of a team and hope to lead a large group of people effectively. Joining the group really helped me break out of my shell at the University and taught me many lessons about how to approach different situations as well as networking, researching topics, and pushing for goals. I was elected into the Vice President Finance and Operations position for the UNB Student Union, and I credit a lot of my success in that role to the things I learned from the other members of the ASRJ.”

“After completing my BSc. in Biology at UNB, I went on to pursue a MSc. in Global Health at McMaster University. I am currently studying Medicine at Dalhousie University in Saint John, NB. The ASRJ introduced me to a world of research topics, local opportunities, and a network of like-minded individuals who I continue to stay in touch with today.”
